LHAS Makes a Difference at Urban Impact Summer Camp

LHAS is continuing its support of the Urban Impact Foundation by supplying the Smart Unit for the Urban Impact and Pittsburgh Companies Health and Fitness Week in June 2011. During the week, the kids learned about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle with both instruction and fun activities. It was part of Urban Impact’s emerging focus on helping children make healthy choices they can share with their families.

“We’re encouraging kids to get fit and hope they will make it a personal goal to participate in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon as we get on board as a new Charity Partner next year,” notes Rev. Dr. Ed Glover, Urban Impact’s Founder and President. It’s another way Urban Impact is holistically investing in the lives of youth and families on the North Side, or “changing lives one person, one family, one block at a time,” as its slogan states.

Health and Fitness Week was five days’ worth of learning for first- through sixth-graders from all over the city. A full itinerary of all volunteer-manned activities and donated services with kids doing something different every day. LHAS sponsored the UPMC SMART Unit, a multi-purpose mobile unit on which boys and girls took the President’s Challenge, measured their body mass indices, and took other baseline measurements that can be compared again at the end of camp in August. Kids also saw a demo of an AED unit and did hands-on activities to learn about good nutrition and personal safety. All of these events were sponsored by LHAS. The rest of the week’s events were sponsored by various other companies.
