The Ladies Hospital Aid Society Gala, August 27, 2011

Humphrey Bogart would have been right at home Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Ladies Hospital Aid Society (LHAS) Gala. The Moroccan-themed ”Here’s Looking at You, Kid“ was a joyful celebration of the LHAS Patient Support and Operations Fund for Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the LHAS Volunteens for registration and treated to a gazebo of donated “smiles”. Beautiful violin music set the tone as LHAS Board Members modeled furs and accessories from Saks Fur Salon. Guests enjoyed cocktails and shopped for designer jewelry, handbags and sunglasses from Sammar Accessories and autographed memorabilia from Sign-On Sports.

The ballroom was a visual explosion with pink, orange, eggplant and cooper fabric tented ceiling and walls with a burnt orange dance floor accented with gold borders. In addition to the exotic Bazaar Bars placed around the room, Bonnie Walker Events created centerpieces of large gold bird cages, long fabric swags that dramatically dropped from ceiling to tabletop, and colorful flowers in Moroccan-inspired vases. “It’s wonderful to support such a great organization and cause,” stated Bonnie Walker. “I’m in love with this Gala Committee. Everyone is so dedicated and they work together like one big family.” Each place setting was sweetly enhanced with a chocolate heart-shaped box topped with a tuxedo look and filled with creamy truffles--another wonderful gift from Sarris Candies.

LHAS President Laura Kronk extended a warm welcome and introduced Executive Director Dee Dee Troutman. Dee Dee presented the LHAS Innovation Awards in recognition of cutting edge methods and/or programs in healthcare. The 2011 Awards of $25,000 each were presented to Dr. Kenneth K.W. Lee for his work with the Patient and Family Education and Resource Center at Presbyterian and Montefiore Hospitals; and to Dr. Andrew Watson for his work with Telemedicine.

Gala Chairs Ruby Kang and Mary Ellen Wampler acknowledged the many people who helped create the magical evening. The Gala Chairs also recognized the LHAS Doctors of Distinction: Mark Lovell, Terence Starz, David Whitcomb and Marshall Webster

Master of Ceremonies Sally Wiggin conducted greetings and introductions to the 400 guests in attendance. Longtime Children’s Board Member Hoddy Hanna and his wife Mary Anne served as Honorary Chairs for the evening.

A check for $150,000 was presented to Chief of Children’s Hospital Pediatric Plastic Surgery Division Dr. Joseph Losee.

The bewitching sounds of Gary Racan and the studio-e band filled the ballroom almost non-stop throughout the evening with guests covering the dance floor. Between dance numbers, everyone enjoyed the three course meal of stilton salad; bleu cheese crusted filet mignon along with black cod, and a dessert of vanilla crème brulee.

The fabulous Chocolate Fountain and Sandeman Founders Reserve Port Wine Station were sponsored by Cleveland Brothers Equipment Co., Inc.

Adding to the fun were two ShutterBooths, sponsored by First Niagara Bank that allowed guests to instantly take old fashion-style photos in a four picture strip.

Gala Chair Ruby Kang summed up the evening by saying “It was a real team effort with fantastic results. Everyone pitched in their own unique talents and gifts toward one goal, which was to raise money for Dr. Joseph Losee, the Department of Pediatric Plastic Surgery, and the children who they serve. Mary Ellen and I had a ying-yang relationship; one would pick up where the other left off. Laura and Dee Dee were ever present with their experience and knowledge of past galas. Bonnie Walker and her staff worked their magic to make everything just so beautiful, and Gary Racan and the studio-e band get better every year. Indeed, Here’s Looking at You, Kid!”

After the conga line ended, the sparkling belly dancing scarves were folded away, and the tassels removed, the 2011 Gala raised $298,000. Many thanks to the LHAS members, staff, guests, and donors that help achieve not only a wonderful evening but, much more importantly, support for the LHAS Patient Support and Operations Fund for the Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
